Reporting to: Senior Manager - Operations
Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a copper mining
company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North-Western
region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km south
west of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi
staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and
producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper
metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single
open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced
and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Mine Manager.
Role Summary
Reporting to the Senior Manager - Operations, you will be
responsible for leading a team to discharge responsibly all aspects of open-pit
mine operations including projects, earthworks, contractors, associated
infrastructure and interfacing with all other disciplines necessary for safe
and efficient production. Your duties will include but not limited to the
following:
Responsibilities
- Provide
leadership necessary to ensure that employees and any contractors adhere
to safety and environmental standards that meet or exceed industry
standards and any applicable legislation.
- Provide
direction, leadership and resources to all section superintendents to
ensure an effective team operation is established and maintained and that
morale is maintained at a high level.
- Assist
in development of the Mining Planning time cycles and content.
- Ensure
the ongoing use and development of the Mining Management Operating System.
- Manage
mining operations to ensure that all equipment is operated in the most
cost-effective manner and production targets are met or exceeded.
- Oversee
the development and implementation of budgets and Life of Mine plans.
- Actively
promote, monitor and enforce compliance of personnel with safe work
practices.
- Identify
specific areas for cost improvement and ensure the development and
implementation of action plans to achieve these gains.
- Develop
and maintain a team structure that adheres to Barrick’s Organizational
Framework policy, enables teamwork and personal development while focusing
on the achievement of results.
- Assist
the Management – in a support role with regards the management of mine
plan and scheduling of equipment.
- Train
dispatchers on system usage optimization;
- Ensure
appropriate facilities, procedures and workforce competence to achieve
legal compliance, incident prevention and the achievement of tasks in an
environmentally sustainable manner
Experience & Qualifications
- Degree
in Mining Engineering
- More
than10 years’ experience in the open pit mining industry.
- Experience
in large multi pit operations utilising large scale mining equipment such
as drill rigs, Loading and hauling equipment.
- Demonstrated
ability to motivate and lead teams of highly skilled and experienced
personnel having diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Prior
experience in similar roles in Sub-Saharan Africa with demonstrated
positive outcomes an advantage.
- Able
to clearly demonstrate the aptitude to drive a light vehicle and hold a
current Zambian drivers licence or able to obtain one.
- Must
have excellent written and oral communication skills in English and show a
commitment to work in a diverse cultural environment.
- Strong
competence in incident/accident investigations.
- Proven
ability to deliver results and act as a change agent.
- Demonstrated
ability to lead a team safely and improve team safety awareness.
- High
level understanding of all relevant legislation affecting the employment
and safety of persons in the mining industry in Zambia.
