Technical Advisor – Drill and Blast

Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a copper mining
company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North Western
region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km south
west of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi
staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and
producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper
metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single
open cut copper mine in Africa. The
Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be
considered for the position of Technical Advisor – Drill and Blast
Role
Summary
Reporting
to the Drill & Blast Superintendent, you
will be responsible for providing technical support, leadership, coaching and
supervision for the operation across all drill and blast activities. Your
duties will include but are not limited to the following:
· Advise
the drill and blast teams to ensure that a safe working environment for all
staff, including associated contractors, is always maintained.
· Assist
with daily drilling and blasting activities to ensure that production schedules
and targets are achieved in a cost-effective manner.
· Advise
and manage the drilling and blasting coordinators and supervisors in executing
the blast design, drilling plan, charging plan and tie up plan.
· Assist
in the training and development of drilling and blasting personnel.
· Provide
necessary input into drill and blast design.
· Ensure
that all drilling information is recorded and that all drilling reports are
correct, accurate and timely submitted.
· Assist
in ongoing research and development for new market products, trends and methods
to improve drilling and blasting performance.
· Continuously
monitor the drill contractor to render high level of service in GET management
and supply to meet their contractual obligations.
· Assist
in the monitoring of the blasting contractor on supply, quality and service and
that they meet their contractual obligations.
· Manage
and advise the performance of all drill and blast crew.
· Focus
on the cost-efficient use of all drilling consumables i.e. drill bits, drill
rods, hammers and other drilling accessories. Ensure effective utilization of
the drill equipment
· Ensure
appropriate facilities, procedures and workforce competence to achieve legal
compliance, incident prevention and the achievement of tasks in an
environmentally sustainable manner.
· Work towards continuous improvement in drilling
and blasting methods that have a major impact on the mining operations
To be considered for the position, you must meet the
following requirements:
· Diploma/Degree in
mining engineering.
· At least (10
years) in the open pit mining industry in Drill and Blast of which 5 years or
more must be in a senior supervisory role.
· Experience in
large multi pit operations utilising large scale mining equipment. Drill rig
and blasting experience essential. Knowledge of dozer operation is essential
· Must have
excellent written and oral communication skills in English and show a
commitment to understand local culture and impart your mining operations and
technical knowledge.
· Experience in
managing costs and budgeting
